KING of Performai (abbreviated as KoP) is the official series of tournaments for SEGA's Performai series of music games: maimai, CHUNITHM and オンゲキ. The tournament has taken place annually since its first edition in 2019.
Format and ruleset
Entry
Players will register online for each tournament via the NET website for their respective games. For the 2019 and 2020 tournaments, players also needed to indicate the area of Japan in which they were participating for the area tournaments.1
Online qualifiers
An online qualifier determines which players advance to the next round. During the time period allotted for this round, players are to play the designated songs for the round. Player rankings for the round are determined as follows for each game:
- For オンゲキ, both TECHNICAL SCORE (T-SCORE) and PLATINUM SCORE (P-SCORE) are recorded for every play of the designated songs, and the rankings are determined by total highest achieved T-SCORE, with total highest achieved P-SCORE being the tiebreaker in the event of a tie in the former. If both are tied, whoever achieved the T-SCORE total first is ranked higher (note that this recorded time is only updated upon an increase in T-SCORE; P-SCORE improvements do not prompt an update).
- For CHUNITHM, rankings are based simply on the total scores of each player across the designated qualification courses. The highest score achieved within the qualification period for each course is counted towards the total. In the event of a tie in total score, whoever achieved the score first is ranked higher (note that this recorded time is updated upon an increase in total score).
- For maimai でらっくす, rankings are based on the total achievement rate of the three designated songs in one credit, with total DX score across the three songs being used as a tiebreaker in the event the former is tied. If both are tied, whoever achieved the score first is ranked higher (note that this recorded time is only updated upon an increase in total achievement rate; DX score improvements do not prompt an update).
For the 2019 and 2020 tournaments, plays from any arcade across Japan counted towards the qualifiers; it was not required to play in arcades in the player's registered area. After the round is finished, a set number of players will advance to the next round, and from the 5th tournament onwards, the Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ).
Area tournaments (2019 and 2020)
For the 2019 and 2020 tournaments, top performers for each area played in an area tournament to determine the finalists. Due to differences in formats used for these tournaments within their lifespan, the specifics of each are explained further in their respective tournament sections.
In general, they were played in a single-elimination format. For each match, each player selects one song from a designated song pool for each round, and each group plays the two songs selected by the two players. The same song cannot be chosen twice by each player throughout all rounds.
The winner for each match was determined as follows:
- For オンゲキ, the total T-SCORE across all songs is used as the main score, with tiebreakers being the total number of CRITICAL BREAKs, BREAKs, and HITs, in that order.
- For CHUNITHM, the total score across all songs is used as the main score, with tiebreakers being the total number of JUSTICE CRITICALs, JUSTICEs, and ATTACKs, in that order.
- For maimai でらっくす, the achievement rate across all songs is used as the main score, with the tiebreaker being the total DX score across all songs.
For all games, if all metrics are tied, the staff would select another song from the pool for the players to compete again, until one player wins.
After the conclusion of the round, a set number of players per area advanced to the final tournament.
Last Chance Qualifier (5th onwards)
For the Japan tournament, the players ranked 8th to 15th in the online qualifiers are to participate in a Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ) round to determine the 8th spot in the final tournament.
If there are fewer than 8 participants in the LCQ, the round happens as usual without any other players being bumped up, effectively ensuring players ranked 16th and below could not advance to the final tournament under any circumstances. If a player who won the LCQ later withdraws, another player may be bumped up to advance to the final tournament based on their ranking in the round. If no more than one player is participating in the LCQ, the round is not played altogether, and the sole player (if present) immediately moves on to the final tournament.
This round is split into two phases:
- Phase 1: All players play one song selected from the LCQ's pool, and players are ranked based on their score for this song. The top 2 players advance to the second phase. If there is a tie in the score, the players with the higher online qualifiers ranking rank higher.
- Phase 2: The two contestants play a two-song match, with each choosing a song from the LCQ's song pool. The winner of this match advances to the final tournament. If there is a tie in the score, the player with the higher online qualifiers ranking wins.
Final tournament
As the 2019 tournament used a different format for its final tournament, its ruleset is explained separately in its respective tournament section.
For the final tournament, players play in a single elimination bracket format. Their seeding is determined based on their performance in the previous round (area tournaments for 2020, online qualifiers from 3rd onwards). For the International division, the winner is determined in a single three-song match.
For each round, each player chooses a song from the song pool for that round, and each group plays the two songs selected by each player (an exception to this is the 4th tournament's International division final round, where all songs in the set were designated by the staff instead of the players). The same song cannot be chosen by one player across all rounds. If the two players choose the same song, the staff will select a different song from the round's pool as the second song.
For the final round of each game's bracket, a third song is played; this third song is a new song that players are required to sightread. This song is added to the game shortly after the conclusion of each tournament.
The winner for each match is determined as follows:
2019
Only maimai でらっくす was held in the 2019 tournament. However, ZENZA of Performai, an exhibition match of CHUNITHM and オンゲキ, was held between the qualifying round and semi-final at JAEPO 2020.

ZENZA of Performai was a series of exhibition matches on CHUNITHM and オンゲキ between the qualification and semi-final rounds of the main final tournament.
A precursor to the modern day KING of Performai tournaments for these two games, they were played between 3 players in a simple single elimination bracket, with each match being a single song. Godspeed played in the CHUNITHM bracket as a guest competitor in one of the semifinals, whereas one player got a bye to the finals in the オンゲキ bracket due to an odd number of competitors.
2020
This tournament was held between maimai でらっくす Splash, CHUNITHM PARADISE, and オンゲキ R.E.D..
This tournament was heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. For the area tournaments, SEGA originally considered holding two tournaments, one for each area, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, contestants from both areas were to go to SEGA's main company building in Ōsaki, Tokyo, and no spectators were allowed into the building. The final tournament was held as a live stream and players outside of the Greater Tokyo area were located in their local arcades. Additionally, all final songs were given as exhibition songs after the conclusion of the finals, and not as part of the rounds' sets.
During the final tournament, maimai でらっくす Splash PLUS and オンゲキ R.E.D. PLUS were both announced.
The winners of each game's tournament were the following:
