KALEIDXSCOPE (stylized as KALEID×SCOPE) is a game mode serving as an unlock system for exclusive songs added in maimai でらっくす PRiSM at launch, working similarly to maimai MiLK's Survival Course, and serves as a successor to maimai FiNALE's PANDORA BOXXX.
The mode was added on September 12th, 2024 for the Japan version and January 16th, 2025 for the Asian version.
General Information
For each original area released since maimai でらっくす PRiSM, a locked "gate" that requires a matching "key" to unlock can be found at the end of each area. After this happens for the first time, the KALEIDXSCOPE game mode appears in the mode select screen from the next credit onward.
To obtain keys, special conditions unique to each key must be fulfilled. After said conditions are met, a notice is displayed at the end of the credit to confirm that a key has been obtained. Keys can be obtained even if their respective gates have not yet been discovered.
After at least one key has been obtained, the mode becomes selectable. A warning is displayed upon selecting the mode, and the player must confirm before entering.
Mechanics
Each of the numbered phases corresponds to an original Area within the in-game universe. Selecting a gate unlocked with its matching key starts its corresponding 3-track course.
- The current life amount of the course will be displayed before the course starts. The player is asked to confirm again at this point.
- If only one of two players on the same cabinet has unlocked a gate and its key, the other player can still play the course, but will not unlock the song, nor will they obtain the gate's fragment. The course is also not marked as cleared in this instance.
- If there are no playable courses upon entering the mode, the game defaults to starting on Normal mode instead.
The courses follow the following rules:
- A life system is used, where each non-Perfect judgment decreases life by 1. There are no life bonuses between tracks, and the credit ends instantly upon running out of life.
- Unlike Grade Certification's "true grade" courses, a player who has failed in multiplayer mode cannot continue playing if the other player has not failed, instead being locked out for the rest of the credit.
- Using TRACK SKIP fails the course instantly.
- Each track in the course is randomly chosen from the song pool for that track, which differs depending on the course. The final track is a new song which is unlocked upon clearing the course, composed by a past composer for the Area.
- Only difficulties at or above the current unlock threshold can be selected (up to MASTER). The difficulty is selected before the first track, and all 3 tracks must be played on the selected difficulty.
- Life amounts and difficulty thresholds are relaxed based on the number of players who have cleared a course in the Japan version, and based on the number of days since the course's release in the Asian version. Life and difficulty levels are listed below, along with their required number of clears/days since release.
- Conditions are updated every day at 4:00 AM JST.

30 | Master | TBA[1] |

After a course is cleared, its final song is unlocked, and the gate's fragment is obtained. The player also receives the gate's emblem as a collection item.
- Each gate's leaderboard (up to 500 scores) and current conditions (including the number of clears needed for/days until next condition relaxation) can be viewed on maimai DX NET. The leaderboard is sorted in order of clear time, and then the total achievement rate achieved for fails.
- The first 7 phases' emblems are displayed on KALEIDXSCOPE's mode select graphic when either playable or cleared; a grayed-out, unextruded emblem represents uncleared courses.

Immediately after Phase #7 is completed, this phase is unlocked.
Before the phase is entered, the following warning is displayed:[4]
システムに異常を確認しましたこれ以上の進行は7sRefの存続に著しい影響を及ぼす可能性があります
本当に挑戦しますか?
Translation: An abnormality has been detected in the system. Any further progress may have a significant impact on the survival of 7sRef.
Are you really up for the challenge?
On the song selection screens for tracks 1 and 2, past scores for all songs are not displayed. Clearing tracks 1 and 2 reveals a new song; all information for this song is replaced with garbled characters, and the jacket is also replaced with a generic black background with glitch effects.[5]
During the final track, the top gauge on the main screen is disabled; the score, sync, and placement counters on the upper screen have their digits replaced with dash symbols (-). In the middle of the main screen, underneath the life counter, a red timer starting from 2:38 counts down starting from when the track is entered.
If the player fails to clear the final track, the result screen shows the rank as D and the score as 0.0000%, regardless of how far the player progressed. The game does update the My Best score when exceeded, however it only displays it at +0.0000%. All other statistics on the result screen (e.g. combo, maximum combo, number of notes per type, etc.) are shown as 0. Furthermore, the final track is completely excluded from the post-game Photo menu[6] and from the player's game record on maimai DX NET,[7] with only photos and records for tracks 1 and 2 being accessible.
Completion
Upon the final notes of the chart being hit (and the timer reaching 0:00), no further inputs are registered, and a seemingly impossible pattern appears, consisting of 2 wide SLIDE notes, 4 simultaneous HOLD notes, and a massive wave of BREAK notes.[8] Shortly before the BREAK notes reach the judgment line, the game freezes and glitches before crashing, leaving a blue screen with the following crash message for 10 seconds:
A problem has been detect [sic] and 7sRef.exe
has been shut down to prevent damage to your world. If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen,
<please> replay this song. If this screen appears again,
follow these steps:Check to make sure every gate is open
and each world is properly connected to 7sRef.If this is a new connection, ask your hardware or software manifacturer [sic]
for any 7sRef updates you might need.If problems continue, 7sRef will be automatically destroyed and rebuilt.
Error code: 110112050904241903151605
This message ends in --- [countdown from 10 seconds]
(The first two lines are the same as those found on the error screen at the end of ヨミビトシラズ's video.)
After a few seconds, the player is taken directly to the Photo menu, which still excludes the photo for the final track. After this, in the Collection Customization menu, all options are replaced with glitched panels; each panel is titled "??????" and filled with the phrase "サイゴノキボウ ヲミツケテ" ("Go find the last hope"), with a small message at the bottom reading "キットクマガシッテイル" ("Surely the bear knows"). This marks the end of Stage 2; both Phase #7 and Phase #??? can no longer be selected from this point onwards.
After Stage 2
The phrase "Surely the bear knows" is a prompt for players to go "ask the bear" by texting maimai's official LINE account. Sending "サイゴノキボウ" or "最後の希望" (saigo no kibou, "the last hope") prompts the following text:
* Connecting to 7sRef world… [ ok ]
A different LINE account, named "unknown" and with Acid as the profile picture, also appears.[9][10][11]
Friending this account brings up a dialogue sequence where Acid asks the player for help to save 7sRef by finding "the last hope". The player is given dialogue options at various points throughout the conversation.[12] Afterwards, the player can also send keywords to Acid to ask her about them (e.g., "blue gate", "fragments", "bug").[13][14][15][16][17][18]
Sending "7つ目の扉" ("the 7th gate") prompts Acid to realise there is a 7th gate in 7sRef, which is forbidden to be opened and leads to a world unknown to her.[19] She opens it with her Master Key once prompted to by the player, but is then greeted with a "LINK ERROR" message and a QR code.[20] The QR code links to a page on maimai DX NET with an input field for an error code to help restore the link between 7sRef and the world behind the 7th gate. Entering the code from the crash message in Phase #??? increases a progress bar. The bar required 3,000,000 "points" of progress, and entering the code increased the progress by an amount equal to the player's current number of charts cleared, plus the number of charts cleared in their maimai FiNALE data.[21] Once enough players enter the code to fill up the progress bar, another error appears, saying that the gate within the 7th world is broken. The error also mentions that a "backdoor" has been activated as an emergency measure.[22]
Asking Acid about this backdoor leads to her telling the player that she can use this backdoor to connect to the 7th world, but in order to use it, she needs someone else on the other side of the backdoor to open it at the same time. With the hint that the backdoor is in a place where the most people's memories have gathered, the player resolves to find this backdoor. As a signal, Acid asks the player to knock on the door seven times once they find it.[23][24]
In the lead-up to this event, the original maimai FiNALE website was quietly updated.[25] Clicking on the CAFE MiLK graphic's door seven times in quick succession leads to an unlisted YouTube stream named "サイゴノキボウ" ("the last hope") scheduled for 12pm JST on July 13 (4am BST / 11pm on July 12 EDT / 6pm on July 12 PDT).

Stage 3
Stage 3 (officially referred to as the FINAL SEQUENCE) began on July 13, 2025 at 12:00 pm JST.
The "サイゴノキボウ" stream reveals remnants of PANDORA BOXXX, including the maimai emblems and the cube itself. The background track is AFTER PANDORA by Sakuzyo; visuals evoke similarities to 系ぎて.
At the same time, the Gate of Hope became available for selection in-game. The Prism Tower also reappears and is moved to the outer perimeter, leaving a blank central area with the 8 phases surrounding it.

Translation: System has been rebooted.
KALEIDXSCOPE may now be tried again.
For this course, only one song is played as opposed to the usual three. This song, identical to the one played at the end of Phase #???, starts after an introductory animation[27] that reveals its true name, artist, BPM, chart designer, and difficulty level; score information and further statistics are still hidden as is in Phase #???.[28] This animation is skipped for future attempts on the song.
After the point where the MASTER chart ended in Phase #??? (where the timer reaches 0:00), the song is temporarily paused and the player's life is replenished up to the value detailed above before resuming, but all non-Critical Perfect judgments decrease life for the remainder of the song. The amount of life lost per judgment is detailed below.
Judgment | Life lost (2025/7/13-2025/7/14) | Life lost (2025/7/15-2025/7/20) | Life lost (2025/7/21-) |

Upon clearing this phase, a notice is displayed saying "ALL COMPLETE", followed by a screen which features Acid and Ris embracing with the message "THANK YOU FOR PLAYING". Shortly afterwards, the song Ref:rain (for 7th Heaven) is played as the extra track. Ris is unlocked as an in-game partner at the end of the credit, in addition to the KALEIDXSCOPE background graphic and music being permanently altered once again.

Trivia
- The beginning of each phase's announcement video on X (Twitter) features a graphic nearly identical to those previously used for PANDORA BOXXX announcement videos.
- This graphic is also featured in the music video for Cryptarithm, KALEIDXSCOPE's prologue, and World's end BLACKBOX, the final song of Phase #7.
- The music video for each course's final song features their respective area's emblem, mirroring PANDORA BOXXX boss songs, which also featured the emblems of their respective versions in their videos.
- When in KALEIDXSCOPE, the usual transitions before and after songs are replaced with a special transition bearing the emblem of the current course.
- This transition was notably used for 宙天's appearance at KING of Performai 6th to reflect its status as the final song of its course.
- The transitions before each song and the clear results screen in KALEIDXSCOPE feature characters from the relevant area in front of their respective gate. The characters for each phase are as follows:
Phase | Character |
---|---|
#1 (Blue Gate) | Akatsuki |
#2 (White Gate | Mika Yurisaki |
#3 (Violet Gate) | Owl |
#4 (Black Gate) | Kurohime |
#5 (Yellow Gate) | Derakkuma, Lime-kuma, Lemon-kuma, Ran, Dori |
#6 (Red Gate) | Ask |
#7 (Prism Tower) | Ris |
#??? (ERROR) | Ris |
#8 (Gate of Hope) | Acid |
Final (KALEIDXSCOPE) | Prism |
- With the exception of 果ての空、僕らが見た光。, the MASTER charts of KALEIDXSCOPE final songs have the highest difficulty level among their respective Areas' songs, though not always exclusively.
- In a coincidence involving the number 7, the first Stage 2 clear was set at 7:00 pm JST (by the player のん).
- The eight phases, when selected in clockwise order starting from Phase #1, play the eight notes of the "so-do-re-mi-fa-mi-re-do" melody featured in ヨミビトシラズ.[29]
- The final phase plays the entire melody all at once when selected.[30]
