maimai DX:Friend Matching/Splash
Friend Versus affects 段位, which in turn affects the rating. If the player beats the opponent, or gets the same score as the opponent, the うでまえ (roughly means "skill") gauge, a washing machine-like long bar, will increase. If the player failed to beat the opponent, it will decrease (except in very low levels when it would increase anyway). The 段位 is determined by the gauge, changing at certain boundaries, which means it can decrease as well.
Opponents are chosen among players with a similar 段位 to your current 段位. When you choose the song, the opponent's "strength" (Japanese: つよさ) is displayed, which is one rank above the opponent's actual score, so you know you would definitely win if you can reach the same rank as the "strength" indicates. The strength is shown as the opponent's player name in DX 1st; DX+ shows the real player name, and the strength is shown as a badge in the top right corner of the song jacket. The actual score of the opponent is not shown until you completed the song.
The higher the 段位 is, the more wins you need to get to the next 段位. The amount the うでまえ gauge decreases with each match lost is more than the amount it increases with each match won, forcing you to maintain a high win rate.
DX 1st also has special characters as Friend Versus opponents when running in DX Area; for details see maimai DX:1st/Areas#でらっくすちほー.
Grade names higher than Kaiden uses financial numeral characters.

DX+ added boss friends (ボスオトモダチ), which are opponents with the names of chart makers. Their names, charts, and scores are not randomly chosen. They appear at grade boundaries, and you have to defeat them to get to the next grade. All charts used in boss matches are charts that the corresponding chart designer has made. Unlike normal matches, your うでまえ gauge would not decrease when you lose. If your うでまえ gauge decreased past a 段位 boundary, you would not need to defeat the same boss again to get your 段位 back up.
