Song Connections / Remixes
- The original version of MEGALOVANIA was composed for Radiation's Halloween Hack, a ROM hack of EarthBound.
- MEGALOVANIA was inspired by several pieces of video game music, including Megalomania from LIVE A ƎVI⅃, for which it was intended as a direct replacement for its original appearance (as Toby Fox intended to insert this song into the hack, but never got round to it).
- Another pre-UNDERTALE version of MEGALOVANIA appears as part of the Homestuck online multimedia project.
- A spiritual sequel to MEGALOVANIA, titled Megalo Strike Back, appears on the fan album, I Miss You - EarthBound 2012. It has since been used in several UNDERTALE-based fan projects.
- A remixed version of MEGALOVANIA appears in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, where Sans is a downloadable playable skin. This version briefly features the melodies of Heartache and Bonetrousle, two other pieces of battle music from UNDERTALE.
Trivia
- MEGALOVANIA originates from the 2015 RPG UNDERTALE. It is used for the final battle with Sans at the end of the Genocide Route.
- MEGALOVANIA was added to CHUNITHM NEW at launch in all three regions.
- In both CHUNITHM and オンゲキ, MEGALOVANIA's charts contain notes before the music starts. This is a reference to the battle in UNDERTALE, where Sans attacks before the battle (and music) begins, uniquely among UNDERTALE bosses.
- The note designer credit of the MASTER chart refers to the UNDERTALE battle menu. "PHOENIX" replaces the "MERCY" option, which is entirely useless in the context of this battle (as the player has become irredeemable at this point, and so Sans will never accept mercy).
- MEGALOVANIA was added to オンゲキ bright MEMORY on March 7th, 2024.
- It received a LUNATIC chart on the same day, which can be unlocked by accumulating 7000 pt. in the March 2024 Monthly Missions.
- MEGALOVANIA's オンゲキ MASTER and LUNATIC chart contain several recreations of attack patterns in Sans's battle in UNDERTALE.
UNDERTALE References in オンゲキ
- Both charts:
- Bullet and laser patterns before the music begins, as mentioned above.
- Bone-shaped line patterns appear, referencing Sans's main method of attack. White bones must be avoided, and blue bones must be moved into (from UNDERTALE's blue attacks, which do no damage if the player allows them to pass through). Bullets force the player to follow the bones to avoid getting hit. (On LUNATIC, the bullets are too fast to see in advance.)
- At the end, the play field slowly moves to the left, where the last note is placed, referencing the final method to defeat Sans: inching towards the FIGHT button and dealing damage.
- MASTER:
- Patterns of bullets that are shaped like bones.
- Bullets that split the field into three sections, referencing a Sans attack pattern featuring three levels of platforms.
- At the end, after hitting the last note, the number 99999 appears in bullets, referencing the damage a high-LV player does to Sans.
- LUNATIC:
- The chart designer credit is the official Japanese translation of the well-known quote from the start of the fight, "You feel like you're going to have a bad time".
- The opponent character is Lv.1. Sans' is said to be "the easiest enemy" who deals only 1 damage (however, the mechanics of the fight make this much harder than it seems).
- FIGHT buttons from the UNDERTALE UI appear as lines; most button presses in this chart are accompanied by FIGHT buttons. Midway through, an ITEM button appears alongside a large group of Bells, representing the player healing.
- A different type of bullet pattern splitting the field into three sections with lasers appearing forcing the player to switch, which references a variation of the Sans platform attack pattern above.
- Lasers chasing the player towards the UI buttons above, which may be referencing a mechanic during the Sans fight where his attacks interfere with the UI, causing players to take hits during menu operation.
- Speed gimmicks are used to make patterns appear suddenly; during the second part of the fight, Sans rapidly switches between attacks.
- The ending features a full recreation of Sans's final attack.
- Only after the final attack can the opponent character be damaged, as it is with Sans.
